Review: Donnie Darko

I've just seen this movie twice now.

This movie is the type that makes you think twice, maybe more, about what the whole movie actually means, and it's absolutely fascinating.

The premise of this movie is about this teenaged boy who's suspected of schizophrenia; he's seeing a psychiatrist and taking meds for his mental illness.

At the same time, he keeps sleepwalking and he has an imaginary friend called Frank, who happens to be an oversized bunny rabbit with a really scary face.

Events lead him to do Frank's bidding, but each event then leads this boy to learning about time travel and his ability to leverage it.

What happens then is another series of events which actually brings him to use this power.

What I find fascinating is that I had to watch this movie twice to really understand what the events meant and why subsequent events were happening. And yet, now that I come to think of it, in each viewing, I had different interpretations of what was going on, and it dawned on me that this movie is the kind of movie that makes you think. You can have a proper debate with friends about what this movie really means, and what happens in the movie and why. And all of this would make perfect sense, with no right and wrong answers, because the movie's able to capture all these explanations in a way that's not cheesy or forced in any way.

This movie drags a bit, especially towards the middle, prompting me to question my decision to watch this movie more than once. But now that I've seen the beautiful ending again, the way the scene played out, the haunting soundtrack, and the enigmatic laughter in the end, I'm quite convinced that this is definitely a movie I'll be remembering for a long time.
